This members-only webinar was developed by FHCA’s Infection Prevention Council (IPC) to support the skilled nursing center's interdisciplinary team with understanding the risks associated with waterborne pathogens and their potential impact on residents, staff, and operation. Led by IPC Chair A.C. Burke of RB Health Partners, Inc., the webinar will cover common infections caused by waterborne pathogens, sources of exposure, and key elements of the CDC’s water management program. Attendees will also identify three practical strategies that clinical, administrative, and maintenance teams can implement to promote water system safety and reduce the risk of waterborne infections within their facilities. FHCA Life Safety Consultant, Clinton Slier, will provide additional guidance and answer common questions for providers.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify the types of infections waterborne pathogens can cause
- Discuss sources of exposure to infectious waterborne pathogens
- Identify elements of CDC’s water management program
- Identify three strategies to ensure water system safety

A.C. Burke, MA, CIC, is the Vice President for Healthcare Quality for RB Health Partners, Inc. and is the primary author for the Nursing Home Infection Prevention Program (NIPP©), NIPPing Infections in the Bud. She holds a master’s degree in health management and is Board Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. Her 20 years of experience includes creating, implementing, and managing programs that have achieved national recognition, partnership building, meeting facilitation, consensus building, and developing competency- based training curricula for healthcare workers across the continuum of care. AC has worked in public health preparedness and response roles, served as the manager of the Healthcare-associated Infection Prevention Program for the Florida Department of Health as well as the Director of Infection Prevention for Mayo Clinic Florida.

Clinton Slier is a Life Safety and Environment Specialist and has been with Integrity Health Care Systems since August of 2017. Clinton holds a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) certification from the International Board for Certification of Safety Managers, as well as a Certified Health Safety Professional for Health Care (CLSS-HC) certification from the NFPA. He provides clients in Florida, Texas, Indiana, and Tennessee with comprehensive Life Safety pre-surveys, along with continued support in interpreting and compliance with the regulatory rules, codes, and standards.
